Ultrasound-guided injection and arthrographic distension
What are ultrasound-guided injections?
- Ultrasound-guided injections help target an inflamed area directly by injecting an anti-inflammatory drug with the help of ultrasound.
- Modern ultrasonography allows doctors to pinpoint down to the millimetre the structure that must be injected.
- Arthrographic distension (cortisone) is a specific treatment for capsulitis of the shoulder.
What are the advantages of ultrasound-guided injections?
- Blind injections miss the targeted structure in 50% of cases.
- Ultrasound-guided injections allow for precise injections in 100% of cases.
- Ultrasound can be used to guide several types of injections:
– Cortisone
– PRP
– Viscosupplementation (Synvisc, Durolane, etc.) - Pain (inflammation) is relieved in several hours.
- The arm and shoulder can be mobilized immediately following the injection.
- The precision provided through ultrasound helps reduce the risk of complications.
- For most conditions treated, ultrasound-guided injections allow patients to resume activities quickly.
- Dr. Beauchamp has undergone comprehensive targeted ultrasound training in Canada and the United States.
- He has performed more than 20,000 shoulder and elbow ultrasounds.
FAQ
How many cortisone shots are needed to relieve pain?
When receiving a cortisone injection, patients also receive a small amount of anaesthetic (lidocaine), which provides relief for two to six hours.
The cortisone starts to take effect 24 to 72 hours after the injection. In the meantime, patients can use ice packs and take Tylenol or Advil to alleviate discomfort.
Can I fly after surgery or an injection?
There are no restrictions on flying after an injection or shoulder or elbow surgery. Flying is permitted as soon as the patient feels well enough. However, flying is not recommended until four to six weeks after knee surgery.
When can I return to work after a shot, PRP treatment, or calcific tendinitis lavage?
Patients should avoid physical labour or exercise for several days.
Patients can usually go back to (non-strenuous) work and resume driving the same day as their procedure.
